Listening before responding
The Shema is a confession of faith deeply tied to listening, memory and transmission.
It does not begin with an explanation or an image. It begins with an invitation: to listen. This piece seeks to make that call visible and bring it into an everyday, communal or family space.
In a time full of messages, noise and speed, the Shema places listening back at the center. Listening to God. Listening to His Word. Listening within the community. Listening and remembering that faith is not only kept as an idea, but is passed on through life.
For our workshop, making the Shema means working on a piece that speaks of belonging and memory. A piece that can pass from one generation to the next, recalling that faith must be listened to, lived and passed on. Those of us who have received the command “Teach it to your children, Israel” know this well.
The confession
The Shema takes its name from the confession in Deuteronomy 6, which begins with the invitation «Hear, O Israel» and calls us to love God with all our heart, all our soul, and all our strength.
It proclaims the oneness of God and calls us to love Him with our whole existence. That is why this piece can hold a special place in a home or community. It does not aim to be merely an inscription. It can become a daily invitation to turn the heart toward God.
